Measles, Mumps, Rubella vaccines
Rises in the incidence of IDDM have occurred following massive immunization programs with live viral vaccines including measles, mumps and rubella vaccine. One example is a rise in IDDM in children under 10 years old in 1983 in Finland (Tuomilehto, Virtala, Karvonenet al.1995) following an MMR vaccination program of these children starting in November of 1982 (Hyoty, Hiltunen, Reunanenet al.1993). A rise was not seen in children 14-10 year old which were not immunized. Children in the 0-4 year old population who received the measles mumps rubella vaccine were also found to have an increased risk of IDDM (Hyoty, Hiltunen, Reunanenet al.1993). An similar rise in IDDM occurred in 1995 in the UK (Gardner, Bingley, Sawtellet al.1997) in children 5-9 years old following a massive measles and rubella immunization program in children of this age group (Skinner, Christie & Cowden, 1996).
